Friends made on the field can last a lifetime

My school, Carmelite College, Moate, won back to back All- Ireland Hogan Cup titles in 1980 and ’81. I was on the 1980 team. A couple of lads decided it would be a good idea (and it was) to organise a 30 year reunion last Saturday in Moate for both squads. I didn’t make it up in time for the golf or the walking tour of our old school (now closed), which started around 2 o’clock that afternoon. I arrived at the hotel at about 7.30pm and walked straight into a crowd of about 50 lads who, at that stage of the evening, were in right good form. They had the benefit of five or six hours in each other’s company and had managed, in that time, to reacquaint themselves, many not having met throughout the 30 years. It was a mortifying moment for me as I didn’t recognise half of my school mates initially. Many had, let’s just say, that wintered look about them. Two of the lads had emigrated to the US after leaving school. One of those two is now a policeman in New York, the other a successful business man in San Francisco. It was good to meet up with those lads after so many years. Val Daly was another member of the side. He arrived later than I, as he was in Tuam watching his native Mountbellew lose the county semi final to Killererin earlier that evening. The boys from the 1981 winning team had invited a couple of the lads from the beaten finalists of that year. So, in fact, the first faces I recognised when I went in the door were Sean Maher, John Finn, Seamus O’Brien and Ollie Kelly, all members of the Claremorris school team beaten by Moate. It was a wonderful night and highlighted for me the fact that friends made on the football field can last a life time.

Comeback king Burke outlines his vision for Mayo

After losing his seat in the 2004 Local Elections, some might have assumed that they had seen the last of Michael Burke in local politics - until the Ballinrobe based business man put himself forward once again last year and the people of the newly formed Claremorris electoral area put their faith in him. This week Cllr Burke completed the full circle on his famous political comeback after becoming first citizen of the county following his election as Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council.

“Everyone tells me I’m going to enjoy it, but it’s a daunting task. Well I’m in for it now and I’m looking forward to getting out there.” Michael McLaughlin is no different than any first time candidate hitting out on the campaign trail, nervous about going knocking on people’s doors, people he knows personally and professionally for years, and putting himself in front of them asking them to give him their number one this June. The 31-year-old married father of two is best known as a photographer around the county, based in Westport, the town of his birth and his home since he came back after college to set up his own business, and it’s because of these traits that he believes he is the perfect man to represent the people of his home town. Not that it was at all planned at first, “I was talking to Peter Flynn one day and asked him how was he getting on with the campaign himself, he then suggested that I should run for the town council myself, which was a bit of a shock. I told him to let me think about it and the more time I took to think about it the more it seemed like the right thing to do, so I let my name go forward to the nominating convention and was nominated for the Town Council so here I am now.”

Councillors look to cut parking charges and rates in bid to stimulate business

Councillors from the Claremorris electoral area questioned the possibility of cutting parking charges and rates in the town to stimulate business during the current economic downturn. Cllr Tom Connolly told a meeting of the local electoral area committee that the argument is being made that the on street traders are at a serious disadvantage because people have to pay to park to use their business while the larger stores like SuperValu, Tesco, and Lidl are at an advantage because they have large sites offering free parking in the town.
